On Oct. 12, 1978, Spungen was found dead in the Chelsea Hotel bathroom from a single stab wound to the abdomen. Vicious at first confessed, then recanted; he was charged and released on $50,000 bail. He attempted suicide days later and spent time in Bellevue's psychiatric ward. The case has long attracted doubt and alternate theories, with some questioning whether Vicious was responsible.
After a December arrest and months on Rikers Island in a detox unit, Vicious was released on Feb. 1, 1979. His mother purchased heroin that day; he later injected the drug at a party at Michelle Robinson's Greenwich Village home, had a brief seizure, and was found dead the next afternoon. Authorities ruled the death an accidental heroin overdose. Vicious was 21; he was cremated and, according to reports, his ashes were scattered over Spungen's grave by his mother.
