The tribute marked 25 years since four hijacked planes struck targets in the U.S., resulting in the deaths of 2,977 people and long-term illness for many survivors; 67 British citizens were among those lost.

Earlier gestures

The palace noted that Queen Elizabeth had requested the band play the U.S. national anthem in September 2001. In April of this year, King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, laying white flowers with a card signed “Charles R” and “Camilla R,” and meeting families, first responders and charities connected to the attacks.
